The Tortured Artist doesn’t exist.

You’re probably familiar with the concept of The Tortured Artist. I’ll say it outright: I don’t believe in this concept.

What I do believe is that many of us artists — whether we are skilled with the brush, the musical instrument, the pen, or in some other way — are putting our art on a high pedestal which sometimes is hard to admit we’re wrong or need to do things differently.

I’ve been guilty of this as well. There was a time in my life that I believed a course I’d release about a topic I was moderately knowledgeable in would cover all of my debt at the time. I’ve never finished making the course. Do you know why? Because I was too stressed to think about my finances at the time to get anything done.

So, take a good look at yourself and your surroundings: do you neglect your living conditions so that you’ll have more time for your art? Because of your art, do you not handle your finances, taxes, and other managerial tasks on time?

It’s time to wake up! Put your life first, then your art. Your unfinished book will not go anywhere and will probably be edited many times after you’ve finished writing that first draft anyway.
