New to Writing on Medium? Here’s Your Most Important Mindset Tip

Don’t develop expectations — develop connections.

Like any other business out there, Medium is trying to make a profit. And sometimes that means making decisions that we the people don’t see the logic behind — but there’s always a logic. Many spreadsheets might back it up, or a board of directors vote might back it up — but it’s there.

And if you’re new to this platform and start following the writers, you will see that some of us are leaving or taking hiatus because things are constantly changing here. But one thing that has always remained the same is that Medium never promised us anything. Not Traffic, not money, not followers.

And for me, writing here changed over the years. Back in February 2019, I published mainly here. When things changed in 2019 and then in 2020 again, I decided I needed to think on Medium. Will I give it my all or focus my efforts on somewhere I can control?

I chose the latter and started developing my blogs outside Medium. It’s a lonely job, but there are a few benefits.

  1. The work I publish on my blog and then syndicate to Medium often gets curated — meaning Medium chooses it for further distribution.
