I Don’t Want To Be Rich
My hypothetical wealthy future will not look so luxurious.
For the past decade, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to get to know money as I know my close friends. If there’s one thing I learned with my experiences with money, is that I don’t want too much of it and I don’t want to need it, either.
My experiences with lack of money have prepared me to resist the temptation of it. I don’t want to be rich, not really.
If you had asked me a decade ago, I would have told you that I would probably live in hotels, fly in a private jet, have a large house with lots of purchases I never use.
Oren from a decade ago would have been extravagant. Today, I have different dreams. Here is how they look like.
Oren looked over the waves, felt the sun’s warmth on his skin, and smiled. He took out the small parcel his wife made before she left for work. His work was just beginning. Inside was a chocolate sandwich, an apple, a plastic water bottle, and a small note.
“Oren, I want to get back home from work and read chapter 18. Don’t stay long in the sun. Love you. Your loving wife who washed the dishes two times in a row. again.”
His wife’s notes were always full of wit. He smelled her perfume on it and put it into a pocket. Then he took out the laptop and started responding to fan mail. There were so many questions being asked about his latest fantasy book. They also invited him to some events abroad. There wasn’t a lot of money for that, but he could afford an event or two in a year.
When he was done with the e-mails, he disconnected from the cellular internet and dived into his mind’s eye and wrote.
When Oren finished writing for the day, he took his phone out from silence mode and saw Dana tried to call him. His little girl probably had another innocent question. He had her on his phone’s wallpaper, smiling her toothless smile alongside her older brother, Tomer.
Oren decided he would call her from the car. Before he left the beach, he looked at the ocean and sent toward the water a silent word:
I’m no longer looking for a luxurious life. I want a quiet life that still allows me to leave a mark on the world with kids and books who will supersede me. Now only to find that chocolate-loving wife and finish my fantasy books.
And you, guys? What do you want your life to look like if suddenly you were wealthy? Let’s keep this rolling.
